Wakefield Whirlwinds was established back in 2006, when our Head Coach, Steve Greatorex, founded the club. Remarkably, Steve is still the main head coach today, continuing to lead the Whirlwinds.
Since those early days, the club has gone from strength to strength. We have been involved in everything we possibly can, taking every opportunity to grow, compete and develop as a team. Not many clubs can say they have been able to play at every level possible in the country!
Over the years, we have travelled all around the country, meeting new people, competing at different venues and creating countless memories along the way. From our beginnings in 2008 to where we are today, the journey of Wakefield Whirlwinds has been one built on passion, commitment, teamwork and a love for the game.
Over the years, hundreds of players have proudly pulled on the Whirlwinds outfit. During that time, we have been fortunate to see some truly outstanding players represent the club, with some even beginning their journeys with us.Aaron Hirst, the original Whirlwinder and the first player to wear the shirt, who now plays professionally in Germany. Thomas Harvey, who currently represents the GB Men’s team, and Jamie Stead, who went on to win Paralympic gold in Wheelchair Rugby at the 2022 Paralympic Games.
Their achievements are a fantastic reflection of the talent, opportunities and pathway that the Whirlwinds have helped provide over the years.
